President’s Day In Jacksonville
Darryl February 16th, 2009
We are ensconced for the month of February in Jacksonville Florida at a pleasant little resort, Flamingo Lake.
Our site is right on the lake, with the pleasure of seeing the lake about twelve feet from our home. With such a pleasant and private view, for the first time we have been keeping our window shades open. In the morning from the top of the step to our bedroom, we cannot see the other shoreline. It is reminiscent of the great water views we had on our island home of Eleuthera, and the longing for a more permanent water view of our own has reached a higher level since coming here.
The land around Jacksonville is covered with southern pine, towering 50 to 60 feet before spreading into a luxuriant green top.
Yesterday we drove across a most beautiful bridge, the Napolean Bonaparte Broward, stretched from side-to-side of the Nassau River to the east of Jacksonville. A suspension bridge hanging on silver strands from two gigantic towers mid-river, we soared a hundred and fifty feet above the deep waters.
Today is President’s Day in the US, after a busy weekend of campers with harleys, kids, fluffy little white dogs in sweaters, and tvs with ballgames. The park is quiet today though, as most temporaries have pulled out to make the journey back to wherever they came from last Friday.
We have met our friends John and Donn here who have come from cold Ontario for February to get away from record snow drifts and dreary winter days. The month seems to have gone very quickly, and it will soon be time to see them off home, and make our own preparations to move west.
